The recently established Portuguese Optics and Photonics Society (SPOF) will present a new photonics meeting next spring in Portugal. The International Conference on Applications of Optics and Photonics (AOP 2011) will be held at the Univ. of Minho in Braga, Portugal, 3-7 May. P4L members like Hugo Thienpont (Vrije Univ. Brussel) will be among the event's international steering committee.

From April 12-16th the whole Photonics community met at the SPIE Photonics Europe 2010 in Brussels. Recent research, intense networking and EU initiatives were the focus of the conference for photonics. Over 2,000 participants from around the world attended the event. Thus, the event has established itself after only a few years as one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The accompanying industrial exhibition shrunk slightly with 131 exhibitors (2006: 150).

For the first time, the oral program featured not only premium-class talks on the latest technologic advances in the field, but also a dedicated medical session entitled “Towards a Better Health Care: Unmet Medical Needs“. The European Network of Excellence “photonics4life” had invited renowned physicians to unravel challenges in various medical fields, ranging from oncology to infectious diseases, and to state their expectations on user-oriented optical solutions.

The detection of biological matter such as pathogens still requires large and specialized laboratories. Waiting for analysis of a sample wastes precious time during which the germ may have spawned or even caused damage. Researchers from the EU network photonics4life have recently developed a biochip the size of a 1-cent which allows rapid and reliable DNA-detection within minutes on site.

Until the 5th of February the participants will learn in three modules not only about economic essentials but also about the special conditions within the photonics market. Photonics entrepreneurs and professionals will accompany the whole workshop to share their experiences and give advice. Eager attendees will also get the opportunity to set up a supervised business plan based on their own ideas.

Photonics4life welcomes six new members

Barcelona. The Network of Excellence for Biophotonics photonics4life, which initially consisted of thirteen European research institutes, has been strengthened with the addition of six new partners. Network co-ordinator Professor Jürgen Popp welcomed representatives of the new members at a ceremony in Barcelona. The new members from research institutions in Denmark, Poland, Italy, Switzerland and Greece, are also all working in the field of biophotonics. This multidisciplinary research area uses light-based technologies to address a wide range of medical and biological questions, from the early diagnosis and treatment of disease to the understanding of fundamental life processes.

Little Nudges from Light – Measuring the Recoil of Photons

Radiation pressure – the force light exerts on matter – is so slight that it’s usually evident only in the atomic world or in the vacuum of space. With a common laser-and-microscope technique P4L-scientists from ICFO - the Institute of Photonics Sciences from Barcelona have now shown that it is possible to measure the recoil of light emitting molecules. The researchers around Prof. Dmitri Petrov in collaboration with colleagues from the Moscow State University were the first to measure this effect and published their exclusive findings in the renowned Physical Review E and Physical Review Letters highlighted recently by Physical Review Focus.
