On behalf of Photonics4Life and the ETP Photonics21 with support from OPTBIO we invite you to join a Concertation Meeting to be held on November 5th in Brussels

The Biophotonics Concertation Meeting will bring together on-going EU projects on Biophotonics and other interested stakeholders. They will present their achievements and create a shared vision concerning the needs for European Biophotonics. The goal of the meeting is to elaborate the scope of actions which might be covered by an ERA-NET Plus on Biophotonics. In addition, there will also be a presentation on the upcoming photonics calls which will be of interest to those considering new Biophotonics proposals.

If you are interested in attending this event please mark the date in your calendar. More details about the registration, the programme and the venue will be provided soon by email and on this website.

The European Student Conference on Microbial Communication is a meeting of Ph.D. students and experienced researchers from all over the world who will actively discuss and exchange ideas on di!erent aspects of microbial communication.

Topics include the interaction of microorganisms with other microorganisms, higher organisms,
human hosts, and their environment - and the use of physical sciences and bioinformatics to study them. It is a great opportunity to learn about the recent state-of-the-art approaches in the investigation of microbial interactions and to meet scientists working in the same field.
The program includes scientific talks, poster sessions, inspiring workshops in small groups (‘Meet the Expert‘) given by leading scientists in the field of microbial communication as well as social and cultural events.

Topics include the interaction of microorganisms with...

Faraday Discussion 149: Analysis for Healthcare Diagnostics and Theranostics

The need in healthcare to detect biomolecular species such as proteins, oligonucleotides (DNA and RNA) and cells for diagnostics is driving the current development of physical techniques. The development is generally based on optical, electrochemical and mass spectrometric transduction to enable these measurements. These are now also being exploited in array formats, enabling the development of high throughput detection to inform systems biology and pathway medicine by giving new insights into biomolecular pathways and the identification of new target analytes.

This is a highly topical and exciting area which opens up the real prospect of theranostics (the use of diagnostics in informing patient specific therapy), but for which development and optimisation of detection requires an understanding and control of the fundamental physical processes occurring both in sensing and in signal transduction and the comparatives merits of alternative detection strategies. For high throughput detection, bioinformatics (the processing and interpretation of vast amounts of data) also presents a real challenge.

Faraday Discussion 149 is organised by the Faraday Division in association with the Analytical Division.

Themes

Some of the latest optical based diagnostic techniques will be covered in the first part of this meeting. All those techniques have proven diagnostic capability and are in the process of being commercially developed.

Bringing these, and any other new solution, to the healthcare practitioner requires much more than a new technique. Not only does a complete medical system require engineering around the technology, it must be delivered to the market it a way that delivers both clinical benefit and economic advantage for suppliers and healthcare providers. The second set of presentations will focus on case studies from experienced heathcare solution providers who have many years of experience of delivering successful solutions to the healthcare market.

Agenda

 10.00

By understanding the real clinical needs and appreciating what technology is available, or can be developed, optical physicists are now developing a new range of methods and instruments that it is hoped will enter the clinic in the not too distant future. The presentation will explore the application of widely available photonics technology to two totally different clinical needs. The use of near infrared light for dental diagnosis and the development of a desktop genotyping device will be presented illustrating how specific technology can be adapted for clinical use to improve patient care through photonics.

15:15-15:45 Tutorial 1: Investigating Immune Molecules and Bioactive Microvesicles, Dr Simon Powis, School of Medicine, University of St Andrews

15:45-16:15 Tutorial 2: Investigating Alzheimer’s Disease, Frank Gunn-Moore, School of Biology, University of St Andrews

The prognosis for most neurodegenerative diseases is poor. The causes of the major diseases (eg: Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis) are complex, including genetic and environmental factors. All conspire to interfere with signaling pathways in neurons and glia which sustain growth and viability. This tutorial will discuss some the molecular biology, cell biology, and biophotonics techniques that are used to investigate these diseases.

16:15 Concluding remarks and end of photonics4life meeting. All welcome to join us in the foyer for coffee, biscuits, discussion, and lab tours [including a demonstration of Hamamatsu holographic optical tweezers system].
