FORTH (Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas) is one of the two largest Research Centers in Greece (976 personnel) incorporating 7 Institutes. The Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL – FORTH) is associated with the University of Crete. It involves personnel of over 200 distributed into 3 major Divisions:
- Materials and Devices, including Polymer Physics, Microelectronics (compound semiconductors), Magnetic and Photonic Materials and others.
- Theoretical and Computational Physics and Chemistry and
- Lasers and Applications, which includes research activities in Atomic and Molecular Physics, Chemical Dynamics, Laser Interactions with Materials and Biomedicine.
Two complementary goals of the Institute are the development of specialized knowhow in selected cutting edge technological fields and the upgradation of human resource skills by providing advanced training at undergraduate and graduate levels.
In IESL-FORTH research activities range from fundamental studies through to applied and technological research. Particular emphasis placed in the study of laser interactions with materials by employing novel ultrafast laser systems. Exploitation of laser filaments and laser pulse shaping effects for process optimization are of high current interest in this respect. Along these lines, the Institute is one of the leading organizations in attosecond science research.
In 2005 and 2006 researchers of IESL-FORTH have been awarded Grants of Excellence from the highly competitive Excellence Awards programme of EU and the European Science Foundation (ESF) in topics related to: Bose-Einstein Condensation (1.7 M€), Magnetic Materials and Low Temperature Physics (2.5 M€) and Laser Filaments and Secondary Sources (1.9 M€).
IESL – FORTH accommodates a large number of state-of-the-art laser systems (operating in a variety of wavelengths in the nano and femtosecond regimes. These sources together with advanced workstations form unique combinations for micro/nano processing and diagnostics of materials including biological materials laser manipulation.
Over the last 5 years, IESL – FORTH has realized and/or managed more than 100 industrial and/or basic research projects, including several RTD EU projects. Also, IESL – FORTH operates the European Laser Research Infrastructure “Ultraviolet Laser Facility” within the EU Project “LASERLAB-Europe” which involves 17 selected Laser Facilities around Europe.
