Personalising health and care research in European Union

Author(s): Sasa  Jenko

Europe is facing challenges in healthcare needs and costs due to ageing society, an increasing communicable and non-communicable disease burden and the fall-out from the economic crisis. European Union is going to release up to 1.2bn EUR in 2014/15 to tackle these challenges through international top class research and innovation projects in personalising health and care. These funds aim to support translation of findings into clinic and other health and care settings to improve health outcomes, reduce health inequalities and to promote active and healthy ageing.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
