New photonic technologies for the analysis of cell processes

Photonics4Life aims at utilizing the full potential photonics offers to study cellular processes by firstly defining the state-of-the-art of cell biology and photonic techniques to identify matches between burning cell biology questions and existing photonic technologies. Such a strategy of closing the gap between operators (biomedical scientists) and developers (physicist, physical chemists, optical engineers) will not only identify photonic technologies to study certain cellular processes or optimize existing photonic technologies to address further problems but will also identify the limitations of the state-of-the-art-technologies.

Examples of joint research projects in Photonics4Life:

  • Morpho-chemistry characterization of collagen disorders. This project is carried out jointly by CNR-IFAC/LENS, ULUND, VUB, UoM and the IPHT. Its aim is to develop and test on tissue samples a scoring methodology for collagen disorders and to in vivo monitor collagen by reflectance and fluorescence spectroscopy as collagen damage plays an important role for the development of cancer from in situ to invasive stage.
  • Label free holographic and AFM imaging of human neural cells under synchronized electrical stimulation. This project deals with the imaging of action potentials in neural cells in vitro without any labels, using holgraphic and AFM microscropy, and stimulation platform by combining the expertise from UoM, MESA+ and VTT. It is aimed to investigate the diameter variations in comparably small mammalian neural cells for which such measurements are especially challenging.
