Photonics Europe: Biophotonics subconference with highest number of submissions

Organizer SPIE confirms that with a total of 134 submissions the Biophotonics Subconference will be the biggest conference at the upcoming Photonics Europe in Brussels (12-16. April). For five complete days physicians, physicists, chemists and biologists, will discuss current aspects of their interdisciplinary research field. Photonics4Life is strongly involved in organizing the conference and P4L Coordinator Professor Jürgen Popp from Jena will chair the event.

64 of the submissions will be presented orally. Among them are lectures from photonic luminaries like:
• Prof. Lev Perelman, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, New York (US)
Tentative title: Biomedical Imaging and Spectroscopy with Scattered Light
• Prof. Stefan Andersson-Engels, Department of Physics, Lund University, Sweden
Tentative title: Diffuse optical spectroscopy for biomedical diagnostics and treatment control
• Prof. Ilko Ilev, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, US Food and Drug Administration, Maryland (US)
Tentative title: Novel Multifunctional Confocal Imaging and Sensing Approaches in Biophotonics and Nanobiophotonics
• Prof. Brett E. Bouma, Harvard Medical School, Wellman Laboratories for Photomedicine, Massachusetts (US)
Tentative title: Vascular Imaging with Frequency Domain OCT

Furthermore the strong interdisciplinary character of the event will be further emphasized in 2010 as renowned physicians and clinicians have been invited. In the special interdisciplinary session „Towards a Better Health Care – Unmet Medical Needs“ they will unravel challenges and unmet needs in various medical fields ranging from oncology to infectious diseases. By addressing the technology developers they will point out in which directions research and technological development in Biophotonics should advance to create useful solutions for the most pressing medical problems.

To advance research in the emerging field of Biophotonics, the Journal of Biophotonics sponsors a poster prize. The prize will be awarded for the best poster from the Biophotonics subconference. Consecutive to the poster session, a public reception will be held where the winner will be announced by conference chair Jürgen Popp.

Physicians show, where it needs to shine

8 December 2011

On Wednesday, December 7, an international consortium of doctors evaluated on going research projects within Photonics4Life Consortium in Karlsruhe that can better diagnose and treat diseases with the help of optical technologies. At a scientific meeting of the interdisciplinary network Photonics4Life 19 European projects were presented. From those the doctors now selected eight that are the most promising to be put into clinic trials. The project leaders can now present their winning projects across Europe at several important occasions.  [more]
