The University of Dundee is offering 13 PhD Fellowships for postgraduate students with a first degree in life or medical sciences, physics or engineering who have a keen interest in working at the interface between these disciplines as part of the PHOQUS programme.

PHOQUS is a 3-year PhD programme which will train postgraduate students as interdisciplinary scientists at the interface between Life and Medical Sciences, Physics and Photonics in the area of live imaging methodologies.

PHOQUS fellows will have access to world-class expertise in Life Sciences, Surgical / Image Interventional Technologies, Nanomedicine and Photonics at the University of Dundee, as well as Industrial and Academic Partners from across Europe.

The key aims of PHOQUS are to:
• Train a new generation of exceptional scientists in the life and physical sciences without the historic barriers that have existed between disciplines.
• Develop new photonics tools that will feed into the design and development of smaller, more cost effective instruments.
• Use these new tools to investigate the cellular and molecular dynamics which drive the process of cell division
• Use newly developed imaging techniques to investigate the role of cell behaviours during embryo development and disease.

Successful candidates will receive a generous PhD fellowship in the region of £38,000 per annum, participate in an extensive interdisciplinary training programme and undertake secondments to Industrial and/or Academic Partners.

Funding Notes: The fellowships are only open to researchers who have not resided or had their main activity in the United Kingdom for more than 12 months in the last 3 years prior to recruitment.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
